Joyous after the yes vote was passed, Kat and Kirsten were one of the first to say 'I do' in a Queensland same sex marriage.
After almost five years together, the couple tied the knot in a lavish and exquisitely thoughtful Byron Bay ceremony. Their venue of choice was the unique and rustic Earth House nestled into the expansive gardens of the grounds, which evokes tasteful simplicity, inspired by the natural environment of the hinterland.
The location of the ceremony was kept under lock and key as guests were brought to the garden escape in a super-cute red double-decker bus!
The space acted as the perfect blank canvas for the couple's endless imagination and emotion-filled ideas for their big day. Packed to the brim with personal and romantic touches, the day was beyond beautiful. Kat and Kirsten's wedding day details included an homage to Kirsten's Scottish heritage with bagpipes and a traditional kilt custom designed for her, complete with an authentic sporran and ghillie brogues.
The pair had photos of their parents who were no longer with them printed onto cufflinks for Kirsten to hold close as they said their vows.
Kat walked down the aisle to a local acoustic female guitarist who played for our bridesmaids and entrance song.
The following festivities were filled with champagne towers and roaming espresso martinis for dessert as well as an exquisite geode crystal cake custom made by Australia's Greatest Bake Off winner Nancy Ho.
The entire day was decked out in a bounty of fresh blooms in neutrals and fresh blush hues. The overall feel the pair endeavoured to create was bohemian, yet classic - and they undeniably achieved it.
Kat stunned in her heavenly Mila gown by US label, Enzoani. A divinely beaded strapless mermaid gown finished with multidimensional lace and softly whispering tulle at its hemline. She finished her look with tousled waves, a bronze-y makeup look and a gorgeous mantilla veil.
'I had always envisioned getting married in a white dress covered in lace so I found my dream dress [in the Mila gown].'
"I loved how it fit my body like a glove and accentuated my curves. I wanted to celebrate my body and it gave me the confidence to feel proud standing next to my beautiful wife. I loved how detailed yet elegant it was and it was such high quality that my tailor said that it was the most incredible gown she has ever seen in her 30 years."
"Walking down the aisle towards Kirsten was like I was in a dream. I couldn't hear anything - all I could see was her."
The pair could not have been happier with their wedding day and their wedded life to come.
'To meet someone who shared the same values, beliefs and morals would be the foundation of where our love grew,' Kat explained.
'Very quickly I realised that I had finally met the one and the days and years we spent together have flown by and we haven't looked back.'
Kirsten first popped the question in the New York State Library.
'In the large staircase surrounded by books Kirsten whispered in my ear "Will you be my forever?" And I replied "Yes, always" and we both cried in happiness,' Kat recalled.
While the day was filled with love and emotion, the newlyweds, instead of heading towards a honeymoon, opted to spend time time with family and friends from both interstate and overseas following the wedding.
The loved-up couple are currently working towards their next shared-dream of raising a family - currently saving for IVF treatments.
'To have a baby is the most exciting step that we are both looking forward to now that we are married. This is something we have wanted for so long and we are so excited to take this next chapter.' Explains Kat.
